Burnout, in contrast, develops after prolonged exposure to unmanaged stress. Individuals experiencing burnout often want to perform well but feel physically and emotionally unable to sustain effort.

Research published in occupational health literature shows that burnout is associated with measurable stress responses, emotional exhaustion, and cognitive fatigue. These are not characteristics of laziness. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), burnout reduces energy, focus, and engagement due to chronic stress exposure.
The difference lies primarily in cause. Laziness reflects choice or motivation. Burnout reflects depletion.

It is not simply emotional fatigue, it reflects sustained physiological stress.
One of the key mechanisms involved is chronic activation of the stress response system. When a person remains under prolonged pressure, the body continues releasing stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. While these hormones are helpful in short bursts, persistent elevation keeps the body in a heightened “fight-or-flight” state. Over time, this can place strain on the cardiovascular system by increasing heart rate, tightening blood vessels, and raising blood pressure. Sustained high blood pressure and vascular tension may increase the risk of hypertension and other heart-related conditions.

Extended rest periods, including regular breaks and adequate time away from work, are associated with improved stress recovery. Research in occupational psychology shows that detachment from work during non-work hours supports emotional restoration. - Boundary setting
Limiting excessive workload and clarifying role expectations can reduce chronic stress. Workplace interventions that adjust job demands have been shown to reduce burnout risk. - Sleep hygiene practices
The National Health Service (NHS) emphasizes consistent sleep schedules, reduced screen exposure before bed, and a calm sleep environment to improve sleep quality. Adequate sleep supports cognitive and emotional regulation. - Reducing chronic stressors
