Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, aged 74, officially resigned on Monday evening. As stated in his resignation letter submitted to President Droupadi Murmu under Article 67(a) of the Constitution, Jagdeep resigned “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice,”
His resignation took effect immediately amid the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, ending around three years of his five-year tenure
Before stepping down, Dhankhar chaired the first day of the Rajya Sabha. The Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh is now presiding in his stead. He had assume office in August 2022 and his five-year tenure was set to run till August 2027.
Today, on July 22, President Murmu accepted the letter as confirmed though the notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The announcement was made formal after Rajya Sabha informed the members of the notification.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his best wishes on X, stating
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”
