ABOUT
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is seeking experienced public health professionals to join the Selection Committee for its Population Health Career Scientist Award (PHCSA), with applications closing on 26 May 2026.
This role is aimed at senior leaders—such as Directors of Public Health and heads of Health Determinant Research Centres—and offers an opportunity to help shape population health research by supporting emerging experts and influencing funding decisions.
The PHCSA is a UK-wide programme focused on developing future leaders in population health research, particularly those nearing senior academic positions. It supports innovative research addressing broader determinants of health while promoting leadership development to improve public health outcomes.
Responsbilities
- Person: Alignment of the applicant’s career stage with PHCSA criteria
- Training and Development: Strength and relevance of professional development plans
- Project: Quality and robustness of the proposed research, including public involvement
- Place: Commitment and capability of the host organisation
Tenure and Time Commitment
- Review applications and provide detailed feedback for shortlisting
- Attend two days of interview meetings annually
- Dedicate approximately one additional day for preparation and follow-up work
Eligibility
- Relevant professional experience in public health
- Understanding of the importance of public health research
- Recent or current senior-level experience within the UK public health sector
- Proven leadership and research track record
- Appropriate professional qualifications and registrations
- Analyse and summarise complex documentation
- Engage confidently in professional discussions
- Communicate feedback clearly and constructively
- Use digital systems and demonstrate computer literacy
Qualifications
- Experience with peer review processes
- Prior involvement in NIHR programmes
- Knowledge of public health research methodologies and development
