About the College of Health Sciences
UKZN’s College of Health Sciences encompasses the School of Medicine and the School of Health Sciences, both of which have built a strong legacy in clinical and academic research. These Schools offer vibrant postgraduate programmes and have contributed significantly to national and international scholarship in health disciplines.
Purpose of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme
-To support exceptional early-career scholars in advancing their academic careers.
-Provides a unique platform for research development, scholarly publishing, and capacity building in teaching and learning within the health sciences and allied fields.
Requirements:
- A brief and focused Research Proposal
- Curriculum Vitae (clearly outlining academic and publication achievements)
- Degree certificates (including PhD)
- Identity document (South African citizens) or Passport (International applicants)
- Valid visa (for international applicants only)
- Medical certificate (for international applicants only)
- Two reference letters, including one from the candidate’s PhD supervisor
Benefits:
-R280,000 per annum (inclusive of R30,000 for research running expenses)
Elgibility:
- Hold a Doctoral degree obtained within the past five years (i.e. not before 2020), in Health Sciences or a relevant allied discipline
- Have not previously received post-doctoral funding from UKZN
- Possess a proven publication record, including a minimum of three first-author papers in Q1-rated journals
- Demonstrate potential to lead and contribute significantly to the research output of the hosting school
- Commit to publishing at least two DHET/ISI-accredited journal articles per annum, preferably in Q1-rated journals
- Be able to perform additional duties aligned with post-doctoral fellowship expectations
- Comply with UKZN’s policies, rules, and procedures for post-doctoral fellows
For International Applicants:
- Must hold a valid South African work visa or visa explicitly stating “post-doctoral duties”
- Study permits or visas without the correct conditions will not be accepted under UKZN HR policy
- A medical certificate is required as part of the application
- Only applications with valid documentation will be considered
