ABOUT
The Health, Safety & Security Manager at Christian Aid is a strategic and operational role within the Health, Safety, Security, and Safeguarding Team. Reporting to the team lead, the manager is responsible for overseeing Christian Aid’s global safety and security function, ensuring compliance, strengthening staff capacity, and fostering a positive, inclusive safety and security culture across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead compliance monitoring and critical evaluation of safety and security protocols globally.
- Align global health and safety policies with legal and best practice frameworks.
- Deliver tailored training and capacity-building to staff and partners on safety and security.
- Promote a culture of safety and risk awareness in all operational areas.
- Support local partners to establish or improve their safety and security systems.
- Facilitate learning through communities of practice and accompaniment of focal points.
- Lead incident management and support leadership in response coordination.
- Conduct after-action reviews and contribute to investigations, providing actionable feedback.
- Maintain a repository of tools, templates, and learning resources for ongoing development.
- Engage externally with peer organizations and networks to share knowledge and stay up to date on trends.
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in a relevant discipline.
- Significant experience in safety and security management in complex humanitarian or development settings.
- Proven experience in incident and crisis response coordination.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver training and coaching across diverse cultural contexts.
- In-depth understanding of travel risk management and context-specific safety planning.
- Working knowledge of international health and safety standards and legal requirements.
- Experience supporting partner organizations and local actors in safety policy and systems development.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills—written and verbal.
- Strong influencing and relationship-building abilities with stakeholders at all levels.
- Capacity to manage sensitive information and conduct thorough investigations.
- Awareness of safeguarding and gender-sensitive approaches in crisis and conflict contexts.
- Commitment to Christian Aid’s core values and a deep understanding of faith-based humanitarian and development work.
Additional Information
- This role may involve occasional travel to country offices or crisis-affected areas.
- All shortlisted candidates must pass background checks, including a Counter-Terrorism Sanctions check and a safeguarding misconduct disclosure review under the Inter-Agency Misconduct Disclosure Scheme.
- The successful candidate must have the legal right to live and work in their base country.
- Remuneration: Salary will align with Christian Aid’s Band C (High) and will be determined based on the candidate’s country of residence and applicable salary structure. See salary bands by location for more details.
